I Want You I Need You
I Love You
THE YEAR WE NEARLY LOST ELVIS 1956
Early 1956, "Heartbreak
Hotel”, sold one million copies. RCA Victor producer Steve Sholes wanted a
strong single to be the next release, & because of the demanding Elvis on
the road timetable, Sholes needed a recording ASAP. They chartered a small
propeller airplane, costing $1,000 to Nashville for a fast recording.
Coming from Amarillo, the
airplane developed engine trouble and fell through the sky several times. Upon
arrival in Nashville on the morning of April 14, all four band members were unsettled.
Presley arrived at the RCA Victor to
record a difficult song "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You"
Presley, generally very
quick with a song, couldn't get the lyrics right. Subsequently 17 takes, Sholes
decided Presley and the band weren't able to record properly and discharged
them, to rest up.
Sholes listened to the
takes time & time again. He wasn't happy, Sholes took parts of two takes he
liked, spliced parts together to create the final recording.
Written by Maurice Mysels
and Ira Kosloff. Elvis Presley's seventh RCA single release. His second No. 1
single on the country music charts. Flip side "My Baby Left Me" and
was released on May 4, 1956. Orders of over 300,000 were the biggest ever in
the history of the company. At the time of its release, Presley had three songs
in the Top 20: "Heartbreak Hotel/I Was the One," "My Baby Left
Me", and "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You". On June 5, 1956,
His preceding song,
"Heartbreak Hotel" charted for eight weeks the following two singles,
were mega-selling double-sided success "Don't Be Cruel"/"Hound
Dog" and "Love Me Tender", would remain on the charts for a
combined 16 weeks. Also, "Don't Be Cruel"/"Hound Dog" was
number one for 11 weeks.
